Looks like the males might already headed south, haven't spotted one in a few weeks. Check out that tongue.

Male Ruby-throated Hummingbirds typically migrate before females. This early migration is common in many bird species, particularly among those with significant sexual dimorphism, like Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.
Migration Patterns:
- Males: Male Ruby-throated Hummingbirds usually begin their southward migration in late summer, often starting as early as late July to early August. They depart first to establish territories in their wintering grounds and to ensure they have access to the best food sources.
- Females: Female hummingbirds, along with the juveniles, generally migrate a few weeks after the males. This staggered migration helps reduce competition for food resources during migration and ensures that males have had time to secure territory in the wintering areas.
Spring Migration:
- During the spring migration, the males also typically arrive first at their breeding grounds. They establish territories and begin to court arriving females.
This pattern of males migrating before females is thought to reduce competition for resources and improve the chances of successful breeding and survival.
